The weathr manifesto.

Seven rules. Everything the app does follows from them, and a feature that breaks one is the feature that goes.

  1. If there are people, there is weather

    A group with anybody in it has a sky. Never a blank screen, never "no data yet". Two people are a real reading, not a sample too small to draw. A place has weather because somebody is standing in it: arrive on an empty street and the weather over it is the one you brought.

  2. Say how you are, not what you do

    weathr measures state, not action. One tap: one of five symbols, at one of four levels. No caption, no photo, no audience, nothing to like or score. There is nothing here to perform, which is why the answers are worth adding up.

  3. Your state is kept until you change it

    You hold one state at a time and it is the same in every group you are in. You cannot be stormy with your family and sunny at work. It counts in full until you replace it, overnight and through a quiet week. What ages is its strength: the sky goes on saying what you said, and says it more faintly as time passes. weathr shows both, rather than quietly watering the storm down.

  4. One person is one voice

    However loudly you feel it, and however many groups you are in. Casting more often does not make you louder either — a new signal replaces the one before it, so frequency buys freshness and nothing else. Weather is the proportion of what people feel, not a count of them: a hundred people evenly split read the same as two. There is no manager's version of the sky.

  5. Everyone starts at sun and cloud

    An account holds a state from the moment it exists: sun and cloud, at full strength, cast blind. Nobody is ever without one and no group waits for its first voice. Your first real cast replaces it, and from then on the sky is made of what people actually said.

  6. A place shows a mood, never a person

    Wherever there are people there is weather, down to a postcode, a building, a café. No place names anybody: not a café, not a city, not a country. Every signal read at a place is blind, at every level, on any setting. Where you are never gives away who you are.

  7. Update your sky to see theirs

    Your own signal is what keeps a group moving for you: about an hour where a lot is happening, up to a day where little is. Let it go stale and the sky holds where you left it until you cast again. Nothing is taken away and casting costs nothing. There is no seat here that only watches.
